The WMNC Wolf Sponsor Program

You can help support the wolves by becoming a sponsor.  Come and learn about the most misunderstood and persecuted species on this planet. We encourage sponsors to arrange a private visit and meet their wolf/wolves. Physical contact is not allowed in New York State, however sponsors can greet the animals from a distance of just 4 ft and will be allowed to take pictures.

Wolves in the wild need more advocates speaking up for larger tracts of land/place for wolves to be set aside and better education programs to objectively inform farmers and the public about the needs of wolves.  With climate change, human populations exploding there already is a need for more lands for humans to live and to recreate. Combine this paradox with the increased demand for natural resources,we ask the question, where will our ancient brothers and sisters the wolf(and many other wildlife species) be able to live out their lives and raise their young relatively free from the historical and unethical persecution that is a human legacy?  Who will speak for the wolf? Teachers/educators,parents and public officials need to be addressing these legitimate concerns.  One of our goals here at The Wolf Mountain Nature Center is to raise awareness of the wolf with emphasis on wolves living in the wild.  Additionally, to assist other educators in presenting factual, science based information about the origin, history (particularly in native America),and social structure of the wolf.  As a sponsor you are making a difference in the life of the animals here at the WMNC and also by becoming more aware of the wolf and the needs of this species you are giving back to this Earth just a little bit of what has been taken.  One person at a time we combined can make a substantial difference.

Nakoa - Adult Male

We often call him the lion king as in winter his facial sideburns stick way out giving him the look of a male lion.  Nakoa is Alaskan Timber and Arctic wolf and the arctic is very obvious when you look at him in the fall/winter.  He is an impressive large animal with giant paws and loves attention especially from female staff.    Nakoa is extremely attentive to his mate Natani, always making sure she is within sight and safe.  Mr. Nakoa is a bird watcher and spends hours watching the many birds in the heavily wooded enclosure.  What he does not like is airplanes, helicopters and turkey vultures.  Our future alpha male loves fish and thanks to Morrisville State College and their aquaculture program, many large trout end up in our freezers.  A short story about Nakoa, one

hot summer day he came inches from catching a rather large turkey vulture that decided it was worth the chance to steal some road kill deer that was a distance from the wolves. A pile of feathers was deposited at  the top of the high fence as the vulture just made it to safety.  Nakoa's howling has become deep and masculine as often sends his message out to valleys below stating that he is here.

Natani - Adult Female

Moma Wolf is our sometimes rather intense adult female. Because of a combination of phototrophic and late pregnancy hormonal changes Natani was in "friendly" mode and it has been a welcome opportunity to work with this lovely animal without her typically short cut off signals. She will become the alpha female in September when the 3 pups are reintroduced. All Alaskan Timber Wolf, Natani's favorite activity is chasing her mate Nakoa around the enclosure in the early evening and biting onto his tail.  She has a wonderful stereotypical howl that is absolutely wonderful to hear but she prefers as her favorite to rally howl. Natani is our calendar girl as she tends to be photogenic and even looks good both when she is shedding her winter coat and when most wolves are going through the early summer uglies and simply don't look as "wolfy".  Her favorite food on the wolf buffet is Grey squirrel and she shares this treat with NO ONE!  She patiently waits for delivery of a road kill Grey squirrel. She also enjoys apples and the enclosure offers her that opportunity with at least 6 full size apple trees and she has been observed leaping high up into the branches to retrieve an apple that caught her eye.

Introducing Tala Likes to Sing...

we call her Tala or "singer" for short.  We often compare her to JoAnn Shennandoah with her similarly wonderful vocals. Tala is our emotional female wolf, always has something to say, very vocal and exactly like her name states, she LOVES to sing!  She often incites all the wolves to join in singing harmonies. We expect big things from Tala on howl nights!

Welcoming little big man, Dancing Turtle

"Turtle" as we call him is named in honor of Grandfather Ray Dancing Turtle who recently made the journey.  Ray dearly loved coming to see the wolves and even in his weaken state managed to walk to the fence and greet the wolves.  Natani our adult female had a special connection with Ray and we all remember the day she  howled to honor and grant his request.  There are many more wonderful "Ray and the wolves" stories.  Now getting back to Dancing Turtle the wolf.  Turtle or "DT" is the most outgoing and easy to work with of the puppies.  He likes to stare with those big eyes of his right back into a person's eyes.  Playful and so far holding his own when both the girls jump on him and try to ruff him up.  He certainly has his hands full with Tala and Tashina and one day he will certainly team up with his handsom dad Nakoa to get back at them pestiferous aggressive sisters. Turtle also has  interesting black hairs on his tail that stand up like a spike. That makes him easy to identify at a distance.

Presenting Tashina female wolf.

She is the most active pup. Always on the go, high energy, Tashina instigates most of the "play" and is the very last one to go to sleep.  When everyone else is down for the night Tashina is that one who just doesn't want to go to sleep.  She just has to stay up visit and socialize!
